Kindergarten Open House

Monday, 8-24-20

Children were invited to the classroom to see their learning space with a small number of peers, practice the morning routine, and create a sign for their cubby with natural materials.

As children practiced and modeled how to sign-in and wash their hands, families shared their hopes and dreams for their child. They decorated rocks with their words. Many of our Kindergarten families hope the year is spent making friends and building an empathetic and compassionate community.

The Kindergarten students kept their masks on and moved carefully through our classroom. They were eager to share what they know about hand washing. Some children counted to 20 while scrubbing their hands together and some children sang the alphabet twice!

After practicing ways of being safe at school and learning about our morning routine, the children used natural materials to build their names. We talked about the letters in their names and noticed the different kinds of lines in each letter. They used sticks, rocks, and shells. Following the building of their names we took pictures, printing the pictures as signs for their cubbies and table spots.

We counted how many letters in their names and worked together to identify and name the letters. Our names are important words. We can write and build our names.

The builders and I talked about how in Kindergarten we will leave many marks. To show how we can leave a mark, or an impression, the children used their natural materials to make an initial mark in a piece of clay. Their first marks hang together from a branch in our classroom with the invitation; come and make a mark!

What lasting marks will you make this year?
