our first virtual snow day!

Below is a small collection of examples and responses from Seesaw.

First children used their sound power at home to build words with three sounds. We have been building words with the same middle short vowel sound, o.

Today all of our words had the same rime; og. We changed the beginning sound to tap, blend, and build words! We built dog, log, jog, fog...What else has the same ending sounds or rime as dog?

Next the children worked on their page of our community alphabet book. They had to think of four things that begin with the sound of their chosen letter. We often ask the question, What else begins like ___ ? Using sound power to generate lists of words with the same beginning sound.

Writing community alphabet books are an opportunity to use sound power and picture power, connecting our powers as readers and writers. We will put our pages together to build our alphabet book on Thursday. I wonder if we could make copies of our alphabet book to share with the preschoolers and first graders?

Finally the mathematicians built on their ten frames to match my math hands, exploring the question how many more to make 10? Then they collected 15 things at home. They sorted their collections in many different ways, making sure to label how many!

We asked the challenging question, is 15 an even or odd number? How do you know?

You can see in Zosia's picture that one fork doesn't have a partner- showing that 15 is an odd number. Setting up a collection pair-wise is a strategy we have used to check if a number is even or odd.
