literacy

Fundations

Readers point to and read the words in a sentence; counting how many words, recognizing sight words quickly, and noticing the punctuation at the end.

Reading Workshop

Readers think and talk about books before and after they read them!

We used Book Talk Power during our remote reading playdate on Wednesday. We continued this work on Thursday, practicing book introductions using the title and pattern. The children introduced a book from their library to a partner before reading it.

On Friday we used one of my favorite storybooks I Want My Hat Back to practice retelling; sharing the important parts of a book after reading it.

We used pictures of the important parts and put them in order from beginning to end. Children practiced using the words first, next, then, and finally.

Writing Workshop

Our work reading and talking about storybooks connects to our work during writing workshop. The children have started practicing thinking about one true story and telling their story like a storyteller.

During our morning meeting we have a story circle, working together to cultivate a culture of storytelling. We all have a story to share. During our story circle, one child holds a little tea light in their hands, while they share a true story with their peers.

We are practicing using the words first, next, then, and finally. On Friday the children touched and planned a story across pages in a blank book. After they planned how their book will go, they began adding pictures and words. We will share pictures and recordings of this initial work next week!
