little topic notebooks!

Inspired by little books written by the children during choice, we have been preparing for writing our own little topic books! The writers have been studying nonfiction books like scientists and taking notes on topics they love. Using a little notebook, they have been jotting notes about what their topic looks like, where their topic lives, and what their topic eats. Next week they will generate fun facts about their topic.

Some of the children's topics; dinosaurs, birds, pups, tigers, llamas and different kinds of insects!

This work as nonfiction writers has connected to our work as avid nonfiction readers. The children have been ending our workshops in topic clubs and reading playdates, teaching their peers about a topic and using book talk words like I notice, I wonder, and I think. After a year of independent work, the Kindergarteners have continued to enjoy sharing and talking in small groups, developing key comprehension skills through their conversations and reflections.
