how to books!

The Kindergarten writers have continued to develop their informational writing skills by choosing, checking, and publishing a how to book. A how to book is a teaching book; it has numbered steps teaching a reader how to do something!

We have been learning about how to books and using what we have learned to write our own. The children have many drafts of different how to books in their folders, they are experts on many, many things.

We learned how to make salt art from Nora earlier in this unit, we followed steps for planting our seeds a few weeks ago, and we have continued to edit and revise our work.

Using our check list Hayden makes sure that his How To Sugar book is ready for publishing!

When publishing your final draft, you use what you learned from the mistakes in your first draft to rewrite each page. You use black pen and ensure it is your most careful work.

Here is a small collection of the children's How To Books!

An essential part of publishing is sharing your work with an audience!

We had a publishing party with the First Graders on Friday afternoon. We shared our How To Books and they shared their Persuasive Writing. We also shared a nonfiction book.

It was an exciting and special afternoon celebrating all of our growth and learning as well as celebrating a sense of togetherness as we near the end of our school year.

You will notice Owen and Hayden sitting close together in one of the final photographs- we kept personal space, but brothers were able to snuggle close and read together! This was such a special moment to capture.
