avid readers and writers 5/10-5/21

 Morning Message

During our morning message work we uncovered a sentence from a Seed Poem each day. The children used their sound and picture power to figure out the words. Then at the end of the week we practiced rereading and acting out the poem in front of an audience!

Helen and Roxy Share our Seed Poem

Science Journals

We used what we know about what living things need to grow and survive to write and draw about what seeds need to grow! The children used sound power and picture power to show what they know- we can use the same skills and strategies as readers, writers, and scientists. We made many connections to planting seeds in our classroom and the children shared planting experiences from home. You can see details in their drawings and labels.

Reading Workshop

We have been practicing being Avid Readers of Nonfiction; finding wow pages (pages with information that make us stop and say wow, that's so interesting!) and finding pages that we have questions about. As part of this work, our books have filled with sticky notes, marking pages to share with a partner.

The avid readers have been talking about new information and asking questions, engaging in conversation with their partner about the nonfiction books they are reading!

As readers of nonfiction we have made the connection to being writers of nonfiction- we can write about our wow pages by using topic words and detail!

We continued to practice writing like a scientist by recording a topic word in our science journals; nectar, foal, nest, stinger...We use topic words when sharing information about a topic, just like a scientist does. For example, Austin uses the word foal when sharing information from her book- she doesn't call it a baby horse!

Academic Choice

Some of the avid readers and writers have chosen to write little books about a topic during choice. Peyton loves birds and taught us all she knows about robins in her little book, Robins. Oliver has loved reading his book about insect homes during reading workshop. He is copying the illustrations and words into his own little book during academic choice. He has been working on his book all week, carefully printing the words and adding detail to the illustrations. When he is ready, he will share his book with his peers!

Peyton and Oliver's idea- and the shared love for making little books during academic choice- has inspired our focus in writing for the rest of the year; little nonfiction books! The children will be able to use what we know about writing All About Books and use what they are learning from reading workshop to write their own little book about a topic of their choosing.
